There are two types of teething jewelry, one that baby wears and one that mom wears. Today we are focusing on teething jewelry for mom. Why? Because us moms deserve to be stylish while also taking care of our babes! I could be unshowered, in sweats and a t-shirt while rocking a messy bun and Starbucks cup but I throw on a piece of jewelry and now it looks like I care. Added benefit here is that there are TONS of styles to choose from and they really do come in handy.
Necklaces, Bracelets and Bangles.. Oh My!
As far as options go, the teething jewelry business has taken off in the last few years. When my oldest was cutting those first teeth I saw one necklace at a trade show and was hard-pressed to find anything similar in stores or even on Amazon, it was more of a craft fair kind of good and hard to find at that. Well, now with number two there are more options than I have outfits!
Teething jewelry comes in many forms. With a simple Amazon search you can find any of the following
- Beaded necklaces
- Pendant necklaces
- and more!
Material Options – Silicone
The most popular material is silicone. I have many necklaces and bracelets made with the same type of silicone as teething toys, sippy cups and pacifiers are made out of. The best part about the silicone ones is that they come in every color, including glitter and metallics. In addition, silicone beads can be molded into many shapes (such as round beads, hexagonal shapes, ovals, “jewels”, etc). This means you can find a piece that is as eclectically colored and shaped as you want (say rainbow colored with many different shapes) or as conservative as you need (like simple ivory beads to mimic pearls, see below!).
There are tons of benefits to the silicone teething jewelry. As I stated above, you can literally find jewelry to match ANY style or personality. On top of that, finding pieces that are made in the USA, are food grade silicone and dishwasher safe are all easy to come by features!
Material Options – Wood
The other popular material is wood. These pieces generally consist of wooden beads that have been sanded to a smooth finish and yarn crocheted around them or some of them. These have a much more “artsy” feel to them. Wooden teething jewelry is very natural looking and usually only in more neutral colors, since the wood cannot be stained and then put in your baby’s mouth. I like them for a more casual look!
The biggest draw to the wooden ones is that they provide different textures. The smooth and VERY hard wood and the softer yarn fibers create a good mix for baby to chew on. The biggest drawback is keeping them clean. Make sure they are really dried out of slobber before storing or they will get gross fast.
Ok, but is jewelry that great?
Um yes, of course it is. What woman doesn’t want an excuse to buy jewelry. If you still aren’t convinced you need to go out and buy as much teething jewelry as you can, here are a few other things that might tip the scale:
- Most of the necklaces come with quick release clasps so if baby pulls too hard it will come off instead of breaking or choking you.
- These are literally meant for baby to chew… it will be difficult for them to break, vs your diamond tennis bracelet that won’t be seeing the light of day until they go to college.
- If you breastfeed and have very distracted nursers (like I did), teething necklaces work great to help keep their hands busy and more focused on the task at hand.
- In a pinch they can easily be used as pacifiers too!
- Most importantly, the convenience level of WEARING the teething aid your baby wants is extremely high. The last thing you need when you are pacing around your living room trying to calm baby down is to have lost her favorite chew toy!
Go buy all the jewelry!
