I am all about crafting. It is stress relieving, fun and I get a lot of enjoyment out of having and using something I created. Most of the art on my walls is mine, I give homemade gifts regularly and I spend some time on pinterest (more than I would like to admit). When I found these kits on Amazon I went crazy. Now I could craft my own teething jewelry?!?! If you haven’t read my article about how important teething jewelry is go here and read all about it. Without further to do, here is my full review of the DIY teething necklace.
Option 1: Wood Kit
The Baby Love Home kit is huge! With almost 400 pieces, it has enough supplies to make multiple pieces including necklaces, bracelets and toys. The pieces are made from natural maple wood that is smoothed, burnished and has rounded edges. The kit also includes crochet pieces which are made with 100% cotton. It comes packaged in stable containers (one for round beads, one for larger shaped beads and one for crocheted beads in many colors) which means easy storage!
My one problem with this kit is that it does not include any string/cord/ribbon to put the beads and shapes onto. It is the most expensive kit so it would be nice if it included that, but it is also not hard to go out and find cotton ribbon or cord at the craft store.
Option 2: Silicone Kit
The Hao Jie kit is a perfect starter kit. It has everything you need to make necklaces, bracelets and even pacifier clips. The kit comes with over 50 silicone beads, 2 silicone and wood pacifier clips, plastic break-away clasps and cord all in a cute organizer. Seeing that some of my favorite teething necklaces only have 4-7 beads on them, you can make a lot of stuff with this kit! Plus the company uses certified safe-for-mouth materials.
The one downside to this kit is the color selection. I could only find 3 color combos of beads: pink/teal/gray, pink/white/gray and yellow/teal/gray. That limits what the pieces you make can be worn with, though they are very trendy color combos!
Option 3: Wood and Silicone Kit
This last kit, by Amyster, combines the top two into one super kit. It contains over 130 beads, 10 break-away clasps, 2 pacifier clips and cord in one easy to store container. The beads are a mix of round, heart and hexagonal silicone beads, crocheted beads and round, circular and heart wood beads. It comes in two color options, either darker shades or brighter shades, but each option has a wide variety of colors in it.
I have not bought this kit but it is highly rated on Amazon and the company passes all safety regulations.
How To DIY
The best thing about making your own teething necklace or other piece is it is SUPER easy. Measure the length of cord you need and then add 1-2″ for tying knots. String on the beads you like. At this point you can knot the beads in place (so the stay in the center of the necklace) or leave them loose (my daughter loves sliding them on the cord while I am wearing my necklace). For finishing it off, you can either tie the ends together for a necklace that you just put over your head or thread on and not the clasps in place. I would recommend only using the plastic break-away clasps because if/when baby pulls too hard on the necklace it will not break and the break-away clasp protects you from getting choked as well. That’s it you are done! Let your creativity flow or create a look to match your favorite outfit, the possibilities are endless and can be personalized to you.
