Hey y’all! Have you followed me on Facebook or Instagram? If you have you are undoubtedly sick of all the teething jewelry posts, but people I cannot express this enough: THIS TREND IS MY FAVORITE. Today we are going to look at another AMAZING use for a teething necklace, breastfeeding. This other use has spawned another name for the teething necklace and many moms are now searching for nursing necklaces! I’m here to answer all your nursing/teething necklace questions and give you some great options to try!
What is it?
A teething necklace, or nursing necklace, is simply a piece of jewelry that mom can wear and is safe for baby to chew on, hence making it both a teether and a necklace. For me, teething necklaces finally give something special to moms that are still multi-functional. As a stay at home mom I very quickly fell into the not-giving-a-crap-how-I-look slump. Like yes, yoga pants are necessary but they don’t really make me feel good about myself. A teething necklace is a way that I can still feel like I am “putting myself together” while not risking one of my ACTUAL (read expensive) necklaces being broken to pieces by Miss Grabs-a-Lot (aka my youngest).
While registering for my baby shower with my first, I saw teething jewelry and knew it was a must have! Little did I know that they would be such a staple in my life.
Why is it so cool?
So here is where I start to sound like a sales pitch because I love teething/nursing necklaces so much! Yes, they are super cute, complete any outfit and are great for baby to chew on, but they also really help with breastfeeding. My second is all about chewing on the necklaces, however my first RARELY used them for this purpose. Bigs preferred to fiddle with them, one could argue that silicone teething necklaces were his first fidget device. He would slide the beads along the strong, spin them, squeeze them, etc. All of this helped him to stay focused while nursing.
I would say almost all babies go through a fantastic stage of breastfeeding (and maybe bottle feeding, both mine are breastfed so I just don’t have the experience to say) around 3-4 months, where they will not stay on the boob. I had a friend who said she counted the amount of times her son “popped” off her breast in a span of 5 minutes.. it was over 45 times. That’s obnoxious. This hinders a babies ability to thrive because it can decrease the amount of milk baby is getting, cause pain and damage to mom’s nipples and really decrease the joy that comes from feeding.
Insert a nursing necklace. I’m not saying it is going to fix all of your problems, but it truly does seem to give those little hands something to do and those baby eyes something to stare at. As soon as I started wearing my necklace more, my son started nursing like a champ again. As far as multi-functional goes, teething necklaces, or nursing necklaces, or whatever you want to call them really take the cake.
Where can I get one?
This is the best part, they are relatively affordable and can be found in almost every store that carries baby stuff. If you are looking for a nursing necklace and having trouble, try switching your search terms to teething necklace. Regardless of what you want to call them, here are a few of my favorites! I favor Amazon because #freeshipping, check out the links below to shop each brand.
- Bebe by Me – I love this brand because their pieces offer on trend color combinations, but the beads on the necklaces are of different firmness so baby can enjoy hard, medium or soft beads to chew on depending on their mood. This also always for great sensory play and therefore a longer distraction while trying to nurse!
- Bumkins – This brand is a well-loved and trusted baby brand. They are known best for their feeding products, but recently have been making some awesome teething toys, including necklaces. Currently they have some awesomely fun superhero themed necklaces bound to appeal to any baby.
- Mama & Little – Mama & Little offers the widest style range for their necklaces. Everything from tiny beads, large beads, shapes, double strands and bracelets. They are also the best priced! You can get a few and keep your breastfeeding style on point.
- Itzy Ritzy – This brand is kind of a combo of the last two. It is very well-loved especially by “crunchy” mommas, has a wide variety of nursing necklaces (and covers in case you need that as well) and their necklaces are pretty affordable as well. You can’t go wrong!
What am I waiting for?
Honestly, I don’t know. If you have gotten this far and haven’t jumped on Amazon to buy a nursing necklace I should probably work on my skills of persuasion, but if you are still on the fence you can learn more here, read about how to DIY your own necklaces here or check out a scarf alternative here (for the added benefit of a nursing cover!).
As always, I love hearing from my readers! Do you have a favorite nursing necklace? Any questions or comments? Drop them below and I will get back to you ASAP!
